Two prestigious awards in one year, reads the resume of a man at the helm of an organisation anchored on a service culture and that has grown from strength to strength since its inception on September 1, 2001.

Such is the story of Mr G T Pasi, the Commissioner General and Board Member of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) who on March 10, 2011 won the overall Director of the Year Award for 2010. The Institute of Directors of Zimbabwe (IODZ) handed over the award to Mr Pasi at a colourful ceremony that was held at a city hotel under the theme “Consolidating for take-off”.

This prestigious award comes hot in the heels of the US based Madison Manager of the Year Award for 2010 he received recently. The ZIMRA Commissioner General is accredited for being instrumental in spearheading fiscal reforms through his advisory role to the Government of Zimbabwe. He has thus distinguished himself as an astute director with an enviable grasp of - and affinity for - corporate governance issues. Mr Pasi has continued to uphold the values of integrity, transparency and fairness which he has instilled throughout ZIMRA as the core values of the organisation.

His unique leadership skills have seen ZIMRA surpassing the revenue targets set by the Ministry of Finance several times. The contribution he made to expeditious trade and travel through a myriad of client –centric strategies especially in 2010 is said to have made a positive impact in improving tourist arrivals in the country.

Mr Pasi - who sits in the boards of ZIMRA, Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Aids Care Foundation and St Lucia Park Training Centre, among others - warded off stiff competition from other directors throughout the country and his impressive history of accolades won him the acclaim of the adjudicators.

As a responsible corporate citizen, the Director of the Year for 2010 has a soft spot for the disadvantaged members of society. Besides spearheading ZIMRA’s corporate social responsibility activities, which have so far benefitted several institutions and deserving individuals, Mr Pasi and his family religiously assist the underprivileged in society. Recently, they invested in shares on behalf of an orphaned child who is at Emerald Hill Children’s Home.

This is not the first time that the ZIMRA boss has been honoured for his visionary directorship and leadership skills.  In 2009, he was the first runner up of the Zimbabwe Institute of Management (ZIM) Manager of the Year Awards. During the same year, he was also the second runner up of the Institute of Certified Tax Accountants Zimbabwe (ICTAZ) Taxation Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of the “Outstanding achievements displayed within the field of taxation over the years.” He has also previously won the Manager of the Year Award from ZIM both in 2004 and 2006, making him the first person in the history of Zimbabwe to win the same award on three occasions in less than a decade!

Mr Nigel Chanakira of Kingdom Financial Holdings won the title in 2007 while African Sun Chief Executive Officer, Mr Shingi Munyeza, clinched the award in 2008. In 2009, the Managing Director of Nicoz Diamond, Mrs Grace Muradzikwa, won the title.
